Isabel Kamps Murray Scholarship Endowment to Enhance Rhodes Scholar Competitiveness

The Fund will provide scholarships to University of Montana undergraduate students in the College of Humanities and Sciences according to the following guidelines: Students who have been identified as potential Rhodes Scholars.

  1. Q1. To be eligible for the Isabel Kamps Murray Scholarship to Enhance Rhodes Scholar Competitiveness, you must have met with the UM Rhodes Scholar Advisor, Kylla Benes and be considered a potential Rhodes Scholar. Have you met with Kylla Benes? If not, please make an appointment as soon as possible.
  2. Q2. Please upload one application document that includes: a curriculum vita, four short essay answers, and a brief budget. The short essay answers are used to understand how you are developing the characteristics of a Rhodes Scholar, please provide concrete examples and anecdotes rather than generic descriptions. Your short essays (250 words or less each) should address each of the following questions: 1) In what academic areas have you excelled the most as a student? You may include your major, but please comment on courses, ideas, books, or intellectual paradigms beyond your major that have engaged you. 2) What do you do that demonstrates your “energy to use one’s talents to the full”? You might reflect on your interest in sports or recreation, or perhaps an extra-curricular pursuit into which you pour a lot of your free time. What reflects your rounding and your passion as a person? 3) What issue(s) are you most passionate about solving in your career? What do you do in your life that demonstrates your service to your fellow human beings? How do you see your life connecting with the lives of others? 4) In what ways have you exhibited leadership, formally or informally? How do you demonstrate "moral force of character" and "interest in other human beings" in your leadership?
  3. Q3. Describe the activities that will you use the scholarship funds. Include roles, dates, location, and supervisor/mentor. How will these activities enhance your preparation for the Rhodes Scholarship application process (consider new skills, experiences, training, networking, etc.)? Lastly, include a brief budget outlining how you will spend up to $1,200. Expenses may include stipend/salary, research, travel, etc.
