A. History Department General Scholarship Application
To be eligible for the History Department Scholarships, students must complete the 9 questions which compose the :“A. History Department Scholarship Application”. Each spring the History Department invites eligible undergraduates to apply for a series of departmental scholarships. Scholarship amounts range from $400 to $4500. Carman Skari Memorial Scholarship
One or more scholarship(s) will be awarded to a History major(s) who will be a Freshman or Sophomore during the 2021-22 year, and who has demonstrated academic excellence.
Edward Earl Bennett Memorial Scholarship
Two scholarships will be awarded to outstanding History or History/Political Science Teaching majors who will be Seniors during the 2021-22 year.
Harold E. Blinn Scholarship
One scholarship will be awarded to a History major who has demonstrated good academic progress.
Helen J. Olson Scholarships
One or more scholarship(s) will be awarded to a History major(s) based on academic quality and financial need.
Jules A. Karlin Endowment
One scholarship will be awarded to an outstanding History major who will be a Senior during the 2021-22 year and who has demonstrated independence of thought.
Jules A. Karlin Scholarship
One scholarship will be awarded to a History major who will be a Junior during the 2021-22 year and who has demonstrated a capacity for independent thinking, intellectual growth, and academic achievement.
Paul Lauren Human Rights Scholarship
One or more scholarship(s) will be awarded to a History major(s) who has demonstrated excellence in the study of human rights. In your application essay, please address how your courses, work, and/or extra-curricular activities have related to the study or advancement of human rights.
Robert O. Lindsay Scholarship
One scholarship will be awarded to a History major of high academic merit.
Scott Allen Meyer Memorial Scholarship
One or more scholarship(s) will be awarded to a History major(s) who will be a Junior or Senior during the 2021-22 year, with a focus on U.S. history and demonstrated academic excellence. Preference will be given to qualified students who are not from Montana, but have a passion for Montana and its outdoor activities. In your application essay, please address why you chose to study in Montana. Financial need will be considered.
Winfred Alice Vincent Taylor and Emmet Gordon Taylor Memorial Scholarship
One or more scholarships MAY be awarded to a History major(s) whose coursework and research displays a demonstrated interest in Western U.S. history, especially Montana history. Financial need may also be considered.

- Estimated Number of History credits that will be earned by the end of Spring?
- What is your History GPA as of autumn semester?
- Please indicate which (if any) of the below named history department scholarships you have received previously:
- Writing Sample: Preferably, your writing sample is from an upper-division history class paper. With your sample, please identify the class and the assignment for which it was written. If you are an incoming Freshman please provide a writing sample from your high school.
- Please provide the name and email of one UM History professor who is willing to provide a "letter of recommendation" on your behalf. Make sure you have approval from your reference and confirm their email address in advance.For incoming freshmen, this may be a high school teacher or counselor.
- A one page single-spaced statement explaining what you have gained through your history education at The University of Montana.
